That's what I got when I tried to reply to some txt a friend sent me over imessage....
and after a long tiresome search -that got me nowhere actually- I remembered something that could fit the rule of the culprit :-)
It was the time and date ......it was set off by a couple of years :-)
and that was preventing my ipad from contacting apple's server correctly..
If you got that awful error message check your date and time!!
